A gothic illustrated print of skull and a blue flower. A once cheery, yellow Black Eyed Susan has turned insidious poison blue upon the breath of this skeletal grim reaper. The brown, textured skull with white eye hollows is the presenter of approaching death. How can love turn so wrong? A dark art illustration murder ballad – inspired Virginia’s own Jeremy Rodgers’ Helltown Riffraff – who could so beautifully put this into song. Although I love to sing, I am not a songwriter. I tell stories with my brush, or stylus. The flower her was based on a plein air sketch, and the skull was started during a Helltown Riffraff performance at the Purple Fiddle. Art and music always intertwine in my life. It’s art that tells a story.
